The Kansas Medical Society is a member-service organization
dedicated to improving the environment in which Kansas physicians
practice medicine, and to protecting the health of Kansas’ citizens.
As the only statewide association advocating for physicians in
every specialty, KMS works hard to provide physicians a respected,
effective voice at the Statehouse on issues such as:
- assuring the practice of medicine remains in physician hands
- protecting Kansas’ tort reforms
- improving Medicaid reimbursement
- protecting the physician/patient relationship from inappropriate
third-party influence
We strive to serve as a valuable, reliable information resource
for physicians and their practices. From Board of Healing Arts
regulations to third-party reimbursement, from CME programming
to practice resources–our staff is available to answer
questions on a wide range of issues.
It is also our goal to provide services and programs that help
make Kansas a better place to practice medicine. Below you’ll
find information about some of those efforts:
Professional review
service
KMS coordinates a Professional Review Service which identifies
physicians to conduct peer review for hospitals and institutions
who are in need of objective and confidential medical opinions.
The service is intended to provide hospitals with an acceptable
alternative when the handling of questions of staff privileges
becomes difficult due to local considerations, small staff size,
or other reasons. If you’d like to have more information,
please contact Denise Lantz at
the KMS office.
Medical Advocacy Program
A physician may encounter challenges that impair his/her ability
to practice medicine at any time. Whether that impairment is
related to drug or alcohol addiction, mental or physical disability,
or even the aging process, the Medical Advocacy Program (MAP)
is designed to help physicians travel the road to recovery.
This twenty-five year-old program is grounded in a fundamental
philosophy of confidentiality for its participants and for those
who report physicians. Except in a criminal action, any information
acquired is confidential and may not be disclosed without written
consent.
If you think you might benefit from the Medical Advocacy Program,
or if you know someone who might, contact the MAP Program Director, Judy
Janes. All requests for information will be held in strict
confidence.
Kansas Medical Foundation
The Kansas Medical Foundation was established to improve patient
care by enhancing physician professionalism, nurturing physician
leadership and strengthening the physician-patient relationship.
For more information about the Foundation, its activities or
if you have an interest in making a donation contact Gary
Caruthers at the KMS office.
CME Accreditation
The Kansas Medical Society is recognized by the Accreditation
Council for Continuing Medical Education to accredit CME programs. KMS
currently accredits 14 institutions/organizations throughout
the state of Kansas. Recognition as an accredited institution
enables medical staff the opportunity to receive quality educational
programs designed to meet nationally accepted standards. In
addition, accredited institutions help physicians fulfill their
continuing medical education requirements for medical re-licensure.
Any institution/organization interested in becoming accredited
should download the following documents (all in PDF format) and then contact Nancy
Sullivan for more information.
